Core styles most used by Vietnam exporters
0201 (Regular Slotted Container, RSC)
The classic four‑flap shipper with top and bottom flaps meeting at the center. It runs on standard flexo‑folder‑gluers, needs no cutting die, offers strong material yield and suits the majority of industrial and e‑commerce shipments.
0203 (Full Overlap Slotted Container, FOL)
All top and bottom flaps fully overlap, creating a double layer at the major panels for better puncture resistance and localized compression strength. It is a common upgrade over 0201 for heavier contents, high stacking or rough handling, at the expense of more board usage and slightly higher cost.
0200 + 0320 (Half‑Slotted Container with Full Telescope Cover)
Use a 0200 body (no top flaps) with a 0320 full telescope cover. The lid telescopes over the body, allowing adjustable pack heights and added top protection. This two‑piece set is useful for appliances, mixed kits or when presentation requires a lid. Check body‑to‑lid fit against combined board caliper and tolerance.
0409 (Five‑Panel Folder, FPF)
A one‑piece die‑cut that wraps around the product and side‑seals, ideal for long, narrow items such as profiles, trims and furniture components. It offers good bending stiffness and edge protection but typically requires a cutting die and has a larger blank area, which can increase board usage and minimum order quantities.
0411 (Wrap‑Around Folder)
A wrap‑around blank that closes along the center seam. It is a strong option for books, frames and other flat shipments, giving tight fit and efficient cubage for parcel networks while protecting edges better than bags or tubes.
0701 (Auto‑lock/Crash‑bottom)
A pre‑glued base that forms instantly when the box is opened, improving manual packing takt time. Suitable for medium loads; verify base integrity and glue pattern during sampling. Tops can be 0201‑style or tuck‑in.
How to choose: a practical decision flow
- Geometry and product fragility: Cubic or general goods → 0201. Long/narrow items → 0409. Flat parcels → 0411. Variable height or premium lid → 0200+0320.
- Weight and stacking: For higher stacking or better puncture resistance with the same board, 0203 often outperforms 0201 thanks to the full overlap flaps. Combine with a defined ECT/BCT target when planning pallets.
- Packing line speed and labor: Manual stations that struggle with throughput → consider 0701. Automated taping/strapping lines → prefer 0201/0203 for compatibility.
- Shipping method and transfers: Rough LTL legs, long‑haul consolidation or sea freight favor 0203 or 0320. Parcel carriers reward compact outer dimensions; 0411 helps reduce void space.
- Print and appearance needs: For large flexo coverage and simple dielines, 0201 and 0411 are easiest. If you need a seamless bottom bearing surface, 0203 is advantageous.
Cost, tooling and lead‑time implications in Vietnam
- Die‑cut vs slotted: 0201/0203 are slotted styles that usually need no die, enabling faster sampling and shorter lead times. 0409/0411 normally require a cutting die; budget for tooling and allow time for first‑article approval.
- Board yield: 0201 provides the best sheet yield in most size ranges. Five‑panel wraps and center‑seam wraps can increase trim waste due to larger blank per box.
- Closure and consumables: 0201/0203 typically tape‑closed; 0409 often tapes plus straps; 0701 top closure varies. Your closure choice drives station layout and consumable cost.
- Quality control points: For 0203, confirm flap overlap width and symmetry. For 0320, verify lid‑to‑body clearance. For 0701, confirm crash‑lock strength and glue consistency.
Write a specification that suppliers can execute
In the RFQ “Structure” section, list: FEFCO style code, internal dimensions L × W × H (mm), board combination (flute and liners), strength target (ECT/BCT or Mullen, as applicable), manufacturer’s joint (glued or stitched), closure method (tape/strap), print colors/positions, delivery method (palletization pattern, layers per pallet), sampling and test requirements.
- Example A: 0201, internal 400 × 300 × 250 mm, BC flute, Testliner inside, Kraftliner outside, target BCT ≥ X kN, glued joint, 1‑color side print, palletized 6 × 4 layers, pre‑production sample and compression check before mass run.
- Example B: 0409, internal 1600 × 200 × 120 mm, C flute, corner protectors added, confirm strap positions on line.
- Example C: 0200 + 0320, body internal 500 × 350 × 300 mm, lid clearance 3–5 mm, verify drop performance at edges.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Specifying product OD but no box style: Suppliers will assume different structures, leading to mismatched quotes and samples. Always state the FEFCO code and confirm that all dimensions are internal.
- Ignoring pallet fit: Box style plus outer size determine pallet efficiency and stacking risk. Provide pallet footprint and target layers per pallet in the RFQ.
- Mixing joint and closure: The manufacturer’s joint (glued/stitched) is different from the shipper closure (tape/strap). Specify both.
- No tolerance statement for die‑cut styles: For 0409/0411, add critical dimension tolerances and opening/closing feel to the sample approval sheet.
When to prototype and test
Prototype and run basic stacking/drop checks when: upgrading from 0201 to 0203/0320; first time using 0409/0411; switching to 0701 to improve takt time; changing board/flute; or moving to pallet stacking in containers. Use industry‑standard definitions and third‑party compression tests when necessary.
