Start with why flute selection matters
Two boards can both be single wall, yet behave very differently because of their flute profile. Flute height and flute count per metre influence board thickness, panel stiffness, cushioning, printability and even how consistently a case runs on your erector and sealer. Choosing the flute first, then tuning paper weights and test targets, usually delivers a stronger outcome than ordering a generic “thicker board.”
What each common flute brings to the table
A flute is the thickest mainstream single‑wall profile (typically around 4.5–5.0 mm). It offers better cushioning and deflection before bearing load, useful where shock and face compression are a concern.
C flute (about 3.5–4.0 mm) balances stacking and cushioning and is a common export outer carton choice in Vietnam.
B flute (about 2.5–3.2 mm) has more flutes per metre. It resists puncture and panel buckling better for a given paper set and tends to run well on automated lines. It is also popular for inner partitions and fitments.
E and F microflutes (roughly 1.1–1.6 mm and 0.7–1.0 mm) deliver a flatter print surface for fine lines and small type. They are widely used for printed retail cartons and are often paired as the outside layer in a double‑wall for print quality plus transport strength.
Why BC and EB double‑wall combinations are workhorses
BC double‑wall layers C over B to combine overall support with puncture resistance. Typical overall caliper is around 6–7 mm, making it a good choice for heavier products and taller stacks. EB double‑wall places E outside for print quality and crease precision while B inside contributes mechanical strength and better conveyor handling. Both are readily available from Vietnam corrugators and offer a robust middle ground between cube efficiency, print requirements and load capacity.
Match flute to logistics reality
Ocean freight and long‑term stacking
For long voyages and high stacks, C or BC is a conservative starting point. State your target stack height, units per pallet and warehouse conditions in the RFQ. Flute alone is not a strength spec—paper weights and process control still decide the final ECT/BCT.
Air freight and volumetric charging
When dimensional weight drives cost, E or B—and EB if you need more headroom—helps trim external dimensions at the same internal fit. Always verify the compression margin you need after conditioning, not just the naked sample.
In‑plant flows and automation
Automated erectors and sealers prefer flatter panels and less spring‑back. B/E or EB generally tracks better at speed, while heavy A/C boards may require wider score allowances and more dwell for hot‑melt sealing.
Humidity and seasonal storage in Vietnam
High ambient humidity reduces compression performance. For coastal or non‑conditioned warehouses, prioritise higher‑GSM liners and mediums, consider double‑wall, and specify conditioning for any strength tests. Upgrading flute alone rarely offsets moisture exposure.
Print, die‑cutting and cube efficiency
Microflutes (E/F) give cleaner halftones and smaller type, with tighter creases and windows. B/C flutes can carry large solids well but show more surface texture. From a cube perspective, a thinner flute can reduce outer dimensions for the same inner fit—often a quiet lever to add cases per pallet or pallets per container.
Flute is a design choice, not a strength grade
Strength comes from the combination of flute profile, paper weights/grades and converting quality. Two C‑flute boards with different GSM sets can deliver very different ECT/BCT. Treat flute as the structural starting point, then express your strength need with standard tests and allow equivalent paper constructions.

Prototyping and validation
Before mass production, request samples and run a short trial: fit check, pallet stack, vibration/transport exposure if applicable. For automated lines, test at actual speed for forming, folding and sealing stability. Where humidity is a factor, condition samples and confirm compression after conditioning.
Frequent pitfalls to avoid
- Equating thickness with strength: higher caliper does not guarantee higher compression. Paper quality and forming matter as much.
- Treating flute as a strength rating: specify ECT/BCT, not just “C flute, thick board.”
- Ignoring print/creasability: fine graphics and tight folds point to microflutes or EB, not heavy single‑wall.
- Forgetting cube economics: thinner flutes can reduce external size and freight cost for the same product fit.

- Define route and storage: ocean/air/in‑plant, stack height, humidity
- Shortlist flutes: C, B, E or BC/EB as needed
- Set strength targets: ECT/BCT and test conditions
