If you receive Vietnam carton quotes full of K/T/M codes and GSM numbers, you are not alone. This guide explains what those abbreviations mean, how to express single‑wall and double‑wall constructions, why GSM is not the same as strength, and how to write a clear RFQ suppliers can execute.

Why decoding material codes comes first

Two cartons can share a similar GSM per layer or even the same nominal ECT, yet behave very differently in humidity, stacking and handling. The reason sits in the paper recipe: which liner goes where, what flute medium is used, and how those layers work together. Buyers who can read material codes make faster RFQs, align samples correctly and reduce surprises in mass production.

What K/T/M and GSM mean in Vietnam quotes

K usually refers to Kraftliner (virgin‑fibre dominated liner) used where moisture tolerance and high burst/puncture are required. T means Testliner (recycled‑fibre dominated liner) that delivers good value and is widely used on the inner liner or where print and cost outweigh extreme strength. M stands for Medium, the fluting paper that builds the arches of the corrugation. GSM is the basis weight in g/m² and is the common unit in Vietnam for specifying each layer. White or coated faces are often noted as “white top testliner” or “WTTL”; you may also see remarks such as “kraft top liner”. These shortcuts are not a global standard but are common in supplier communication across Vietnam.

How to express single‑wall and double‑wall constructions

Use a simple pattern that combines layer order + GSM + flute. For single‑wall (three layers), write outer liner / medium / inner liner + flute. For double‑wall (five layers), write outer liner / first medium / middle liner / second medium / inner liner + flute combo.

  • Example A (single‑wall, C flute): K200 / M150 / T175, C flute. This means 200 gsm kraftliner outside, 150 gsm medium, 175 gsm testliner inside.
  • Example B (double‑wall, BC): K200 / T175 / M150 / M150 / T175, BC. That is kraftliner outside; testliner as the middle liner; two mediums; and testliner inside; with B+C flutes.

Another neutral notation is L1 / M1 / L2 / M2 / L3 where you fill in the paper type and GSM for each slot and specify the flute separately. This reduces ambiguity when several paper grades could fit the same shorthand letter.

GSM does not equal strength

GSM tells you how much paper is used, not how strong the board will be. Fibre quality, starch and sizing, the presence of a kraft top, and—critically—moisture content can shift ECT/BCT dramatically. Instead of treating “add GSM” as the only lever, start from the job to be done: target stack height and duration, warehouse humidity, transport mode (ocean export, in‑plant flows or air), flute choice and joint/closure details. The best spec delivers sufficient strength with the least total cost, not the highest basis weight.

A supplier‑ready RFQ template you can copy

  • Box style and size: e.g., FEFCO 0201, inner dimensions L×W×H (mm).
  • Flute: A/B/C/E/F for single‑wall; BC/EB etc. for double‑wall.
  • Layer order + GSM: e.g., K200 / M150 / T175 (C); or K200 / T175 / M150 / M150 / T175 (BC). For white faces, state “white top testliner 150 gsm” and which side.
  • Printing: number of colours, coverage, minimum text height.
  • Target performance (if any): an ECT/BCT band or practical duty such as gross weight and stack height/time.
  • Joint and closure: glued or stitched; manufacturer’s joint width; tape/strap details if critical.
  • Sample and acceptance: confirm a physical sample before mass production; condition test pieces at 23 °C and 50% RH; define tolerances and AQL for mass delivery.
  • Delivery and packing: pallet size, max stack height, stretch‑wrap/strapping and any moisture protection needed.

Samples, conditioning and seasonal reality

Vietnam’s humid climate makes moisture a first‑order variable. Always request a like‑for‑like sample with the same layer structure you intend to buy. Test and compare after conditioning at standard atmosphere to remove weather noise. For rainy season or long ocean legs, align on liners (e.g., kraft or white‑top), glue settings, and warehouse practices that minimise moisture pick‑up. If your process includes heavy die‑cuts or large hand holes, include them in the sample because openings reduce compression strength in the real world.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Treating K/T/M as a “grade”: they are material families, not strength ratings.
  • Specifying only a total GSM: suppliers might meet it with very different splits across liners and mediums, leading to different performance.
  • Ignoring flute direction and box style: same paper stack can behave differently with another flute orientation or a different FEFCO style.
  • Skipping the sample step: any change in layer, flute or joint demands a fresh approval sample and trial pack.
  • Comparing unconditioned test values: numbers taken at uncontrolled humidity will not match line‑to‑line.
